A dongle helps you stay connected to the Internet when you are on the move, or when there is no Wi-Fi in the vicinity. But we explain why a broadband connection might be a better idea.

The Internet has made our lives much faster than before. Your mobility has increased because of it, and there are tremendous savings of time and effort when you use the digital medium for your daily tasks.

Even working on the move is possible by means of connecting your laptop to a mobile dongle. The dongle is essentially a plug-in Internet device that is slotted into the USB port of your computer. It helps if you want your personal Internet connection on your laptop, especially if you travel for work often.

When using a dongle makes sense…

A dongle is the best companion to your laptop. Suppose you don’t require Internet for your house. In this case, a dongle to connect to your laptop can get you Internet connectivity. Or if you travel frequently for work, you will need a dongle to use in places where there is no Wi-Fi connection. The dongle increases your mobility, and if you take it from a good service provider, then you will not suffer network problems either.

But what you need to know about using the dongle…

  • Most service providers do not offer MNP (Mobile Number Portability) for dongle numbers – this means that you will have to disconnect the number entirely to go to a new service provider and get a fresh number.
  • The dongle presents a challenge in low network or high density usage areas. You must take care to insert the SIM card inside the device properly to establish a connection.
  • You are charged as per the data you consume – it is like a postpaid plan on the dongle.
  • You are charged for the dongle device – the modem – as well as the plan.
  • The device may malfunction if used roughly or not connected properly.

So, do you need broadband?

  • A broadband connection makes perfect sense for those who require a stationary Internet connection. Your devices are used in one location, i.e. your home or office, and so the fixed line Wi-Fi connection is a better fit.
  • Get a broadband connection with a leading provider like Airtel. They have a wide range of plans to suit your various needs, as regards price, data quota, speeds, duration, etc.
  • Airtel broadband connects up to 10 devices at once, without any change in speeds or uptime. This makes the connection a more cost-effective one. Multi-device usage is not possible with a dongle.
  • Airtel broadband also has a wide range of plans to suit your needs and budget. Place your request for a new connection and it will be installed at your address within 48 hours. But do check the plans for your city first.
  • Broadband offers a higher monthly data quota than the dongle. Airtel also has unlimited broadband plans.
