There are a number of things you can do to spruce up your garage. Whether that is in order to sell your home at a higher price, or to create a more useable and enjoyable space for your family to utilize, they may be worth considering. Shelving and Storage
Your garage will be easier to keep tidied up and free of clutter if it has adequate storage areas. A system of moveable hooks on a slotted or pegged board works well for storing rakes, brooms or other outdoor tools. Add a few rows of open shelving or even some cabinet or closets in which to store seasonal items away from dust and insects. Closed cabinets may be a better choice as they can help keep things cleaner. Base cabinets can be extremely useful as they also provide a working surface on the top.
Finish the Walls
Many garages have interior walls that are unfinished, comprised of open studs and exposed wiring. Others may have been sheet rocked but may not necessarily be taped and finished. If you will go to the effort to finish the walls properly; insulated, sheet rocked, mudded and finished with a couple coats of paint, it will create a much nicer atmosphere and motivate you to keep things cleaned up.
Don’t Ignore the Flooring
Additionally, finishing the floor can make upkeep simpler and make the garage as a whole a finished area. Paint may not seal properly to the concrete and can chip or flake, leaving an unsightly mess. Choosing something like Elmhurst epoxy flooring will produce a hard, glowing surface that looks finished and attractive, and is easy to clean.
A Good Workspace
If you are into woodwork or other hobbies that are best done in the garage, you may want to set up a workbench suited to that activity. Include a cabinet and a couple of drawers underneath for storing needed equipment close at hand. You may wish to install work lighting and an extra electrical outlet for convenience.
You may not previously have thought of your garage as anything but a landing place for junk and unused items you don’t know what to do with. With a bit of planning and effort, however, the garage can be a very useable and organized space that you can be proud of.
